See what St. Joseph is all about at the

school’s 2018 Open House Sunday, Nov. 11

MADISON (Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018) – Families who are looking for a middle school or high school for their children next year can attend the St. Joseph Catholic School Open House set for Sunday, Nov. 11.

Those attending will meet administrators, faculty and students as well as learn about the school’s curriculum and extracurricular activities. They also will be able to tour the school’s sprawling 65-acre campus in Madison.

“People will see what St. Joe is about and learn what sets us apart from other schools,” Principal Dena Kinsey said. “They will find a school with a strong curriculum. They also will meet faculty, students and administrators who make everyone feel welcome.”

St. Joseph Catholic School, located in Madison about a mile west of the Interstate 55-Mississippi 463 exit, was founded in 1870 in Jackson by the Sisters of Mercy. The school will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2020.

St. Joe offers a seventh- through 12th-grade education with a rigorous college prep curriculum grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church. St. Joe is accredited by AdvancED and overseen by the Catholic Diocese of Jackson.

Open House will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the school’s Fine Arts theater. It will start with a short video giving an overview of the school; those attending will meet Kinsey, other administrators and faculty.

Families will learn about the school’s academic, athletic and extracurricular programs. They also will learn about the school’s spring registration and admissions process. And they will take student-led tours of the campus.

The tour will include stops at the art and music classrooms in the Fine Arts building, as well as academic classrooms for the theology, science, math, social studies, foreign language and English departments in the classroom buildings on campus.

The tour will swing by the St. Joe gym, home court of the Bruin volleyball, girls basketball and boys basketball teams. The boys basketball team, which advanced to the Elite Eight last year for third straight year, will be practicing.

Visitors also will stop by the library and the journalism classroom, both in the administration building. The journalism classroom is home to WJXC Jackson, Mississippi Catholic Radio, an FM station that broadcasts live, student-produced coverage of Bruin sports.

The journalism room also is a television studio where students produce the award-winning weekly newscast Bruin News Now – named the state’s best high school newscast in 2017 and 2018. Students also publish an award-winning newspaper The Bear Facts and yearbook The Shield.

“We have something for everyone at St. Joe,” Kinsey said. “Like our school mission statement says, ‘St. Joseph Catholic School strives to equip young people for the world while preparing them for Heaven.”
