St. Joe to stage Tony Award-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie

MADISON, Miss. (Tuesday, April 11, 2017) – Broadway comes to St. Joseph Catholic School this month when students stage the Tony Award-winning musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” for three days starting April 27.

The musical, based on the hit 1967 film starring Julie Andrews, won the 2002 Drama Desk and Tony Award for Best Musical. A cast of talented St. Joe students, led by junior Leah Blevins and senior Matthew Hendley, will bring the Roaring ’20s to life on stage.

“This is a great way to end the 2016-2017 fine arts season at St. Joe,” said Leslie Harkins, the St. Joe theater teacher who is directing the musical. “We have a great group of actors ready to stage this entertaining musical. Don’t miss out on a night of great, live entertainment.”

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” tells the story of small-town girl Millie Dillmount who heads to New York in 1922 to marry for money instead of love. Mille, however, soon finds herself in the middle of a series of madcap adventures.

The musical will open a three-day run at the St. Joseph Catholic School Fine Arts theater at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 27. Additional performances are 7 p.m. Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29. A special 2 p.m. matinee is set for Saturday, April 29.

Admission is $10. Tickets are available in advance or at the box office the day of the performance. The theater is on the St. Joe campus, 308 New Mannsdale Road in Madison – about a mile west of the Interstate 10-Mississippi 463 exit.

St. Joseph Catholic School provides students in Grades 7-12 a rigorous college preparatory education grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church. Part of the school curriculum is a Fine Arts program that includes theater, art and band classes.

The Sisters of Mercy founded St. Joe in 1870. The school is accredited by the Mississippi Department of Education and AdvancED. has named St. Joe the best Catholic high school in Mississippi.

The St. Joe Fine Arts Department stages a fall play and a spring musical every year. Previous years have seen St. Joe students stage such ambitious musicals as “Little Shop of Horrors,” “The Music Man,” “Guys & Dolls” and “The Sound of Music.”

Other major productions the department stages every year include the popular “Gifts of the Season” Christmas concert. The school’s annual spring concert and senior art show, “A Celebration of the Arts,” will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6.

Students have been rehearsing “Thoroughly Modern Millie” – including its complicated tap dance numbers – since January. Rehearsals have continued for most of the spring semester; volunteers also have spent the semester constructing sets for the musical.

Besides acting, singing and dancing in the musical, students also will perform as part of the orchestra. Many of the student musicians also perform in the St. Joe band and are enrolled in band classes at the school.

“Our Fine Arts program is second to none,” Principal Dena Kinsey said. “The productions they stage are exciting, entertaining and memorable. The talent level and dedication of these student performers make these productions as strong as they are.”
