St. Joseph Catholic School to stage classic ‘Singing in the Rain’

MADISON (Friday, April 15, 2022) – One of the greatest musicals of all time is headed for St. Joseph Catholic School next week when a cast of students stage “Singing in the Rain” live in the school’s Fine Arts theater.

The stage musical was adapted from the 1952 classic motion picture starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. The play and film take place in Hollywood of the late 1920s during the transition from silent films to “talkies.”

“This musical offers a great showcase for our student actors, musicians and stagehands,” said Madison Upendo, the St. Joe theater teacher who is directing the musical. “It’s filled with memorable classic songs, dancing and a lot of humor.”

“Singing in the Rain” opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21, for a three-day run in the St. Joe Fine Arts theater on campus. Other performances are 7 p.m. Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23, as well as a 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

Tickets are $12 each with St. Joe students admitted free. Students from Sister Thea Bowman, St. Richard and St. Anthony Catholic schools also have free admission if they wear their school shirt to the musical.

Tickets will be available at the box office the day of each performance.

St. Joseph Catholic School, located in Madison about a mile west of the Interstate 55-Mississippi 463 exit, was founded in 1870 in Jackson by the Sisters of Mercy. The school recently celebrated its 150th anniversary.

St. Joe offers a seventh- through 12th-grade education with a rigorous college prep curriculum grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church. St. Joe is accredited by AdvancED and overseen by the Catholic Diocese of Jackson.

“Singing in the Rain” features such classic songs as “Good Morning,” “Make ’Em Laugh,” “You Are My Lucky Star” and, of course, the title song “Singing in the Rain.”

The cast includes senior Avery Calvert as silent film star Don Lockwood; junior Thomas Klopman as musician Cosmo Brown; and senior Georgia Conrad as silent film star Lina Lamont. The fourth main role, Kathy Selden, will be played by sophomore Carrington Fowler and junior Gia Picarella in alternate performances.

Student actors have been working hard memorizing lines and practicing scenes for much of the spring semester. Because the film and play feature a lot of dancing, students have had a crash course in tap dancing for the musical.

“Singing in the Rain” also will feature students participating in the orchestra, performing live music for all four performances. Others will have roles behind-the-scenes changing stage sets, monitoring audio and handling the lighting.

“These students have worked long hours after school and on the weekends pulling this entire production together,” said Dr. Dena Kinsey, St. Joe principal.

“Our Fine Arts program does a great job finding and developing talent among students,” she said. “This musical is one that my grandmother and I enjoyed together. I can’t wait to see our students bring it to life. It’s going to be a great night out for the family.”
