St. Joe students head to Hattiesburg to perform with All-State Honor Choirs

MADISON (Monday, March 28, 2022) – Five St. Joseph Catholic School students will travel to the University of Southern Mississippi on Thursday, March 31, to participate and perform with the All-State Honor Choirs.

The students – seniors Avery Calvert and Anna Crout; junior Brennyn Bolden; and freshmen Cassie Anderson and Amari Alexander – auditioned in October 2021 and were accepted as members of the All-State Honor Choir.

“This is quite an honor for our choir members,” said Dr. Dena Kinsey, principal of St. Joe. “Our choir program is on the rise, and these students are a great representation of where it is headed. I can’t tell you how proud I am of their accomplishments.”

Calvert placed second in the state and will perform with the Soprano Alto Tenor Bass Honor Choir. Anderson, Alexander, Bolden and Crout will perform with the Treble Honor Choir. Students will travel to USM Thursday, rehearse Thursday and Friday and perform Saturday.

The Mississippi American Choral Directors Association, the ACDA, sponsors three high school choirs each year at the annual ACDA/Mississippi Music Educators Association Conference. Students from across the state audition to be a part of one of the choirs.

St. Joseph Catholic School, founded in 1870 by the Sisters of Mercy, offers seventh- through 12th-grade students a rigorous college prep curriculum grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church. The school recently celebrated its 150th anniversary.

St. Joe, 308 New Mannsdale Road in Madison, just west of the Interstate 55-Mississippi 463 interchange, is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the accrediting arm of Cognia.

Choir is one part of the school’s award-winning Fine Arts program. Fine Arts also includes classes for art, pottery, band, music and theater.

The department stages two theatrical productions each year, including a musical every spring; this year’s musical, “Singing in the Rain,” premiers next month. The department also hosts a Christmas concert as well as a spring concert and senior art show.

“Fine Arts is such a critical component of a student’s overall academic development,” Kinsey said. “At St. Joe, our Fine Arts department is headed by a talented, dedicated faculty who work hard with our students. The choir’s success is a great example.”
