Popular Christmas concert returns to the stage at St. Joseph Catholic School
MADISON, Miss. (Friday, Nov. 26, 2021) – For the first time in two years, St. Joseph Catholic School’s popular annual Christmas concert “Gifts of the Season” will return to the Fine Arts auditorium Friday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 5.
After COVID-19 forced the concert to go virtual in 2020, “Gifts of the Season” returns in person with performances at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 and 2 p.m. Dec. 5. Admission is free.
St. Joe requests each guest to bring at least one canned food item for the school-sponsored effort to help replenish food banks at St. Richard Catholic Church in Jackson and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Canton. St. Joe hopes to collect 7,500 cans by Dec. 8.
“It’s great to be back in our Fine Arts auditorium for this great concert celebrating the Christmas season,” said Ronnie Russell, the St. Joe band director who oversees the annual production for the St. Joe Fine Arts Department.
“This is one of the most popular events we produce every year, so it’s great to have it back on the big stage,” Russell said. “And with last year’s in-person concert canceled, we are expecting a huge crowd both days. You better arrive early to find a good seat.”
St. Joseph Catholic School, founded in 1870 by the Sisters of Mercy, offers seventh- through 12th-grade students a rigorous college prep curriculum grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church. The school recently celebrated its 150th birthday.
St. Joe is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the accrediting arm of Cognia.
“Gifts of the Season” is one of several events the St. Joe Fine Arts department stages every year in the state-of-the-art Fine Arts auditorium. Others include a fall semester play, an annual stage musical, a senior art show and a spring concert.
The Christmas concert will feature performances by student musicians in Grades 7-12 involved in both the band and choir programs. The Spirit Steppers, the award-winning St. Joe dance team, also will perform on stage.
Before the concert and during intermission, guests will be able to purchase hand-crafted Christmas ornaments created by art students. During intermission, guests also be entertained by impromptu music performances in the lobby.
“Our student performers have been practicing non-stop much of this semester for ‘Gifts of the Season,’” said Dr. Dena Kinsey, St. Joe principal. “The concert highlights our talented students and shows the strength of our Fine Arts program.
“It’s great to be able to return this year with a full-fledged concert in person in our Fine Arts auditorium,” Kinsey said. “And I am so proud that our student musicians, singers, performers and artists will be able to showcase their work for everyone to see.”
