Seventh grade religion covers the Jesus of scripture and faith, and the seven sacraments of the Church. Fall semester begins with a review of salvation history: the nature of Revelation, original sin and the need for a Redeemer, the call of Abraham, the giving of the Covenant, the prophets. Through scripture search, ecture and text, the students over the prophecies of the Messiah, the origin and nature of the Gospels, the events of the Nativity stories, the Passion and Resurrection narratives, the Parables and the Sermon on the Mount. Students are expected to learn the Rosary as a meditative prayer on the events of Christ's life. In the spring, students cover the sacraments as signs of Christ's continuing presence among us. Throughout the course there will be opportunity for assessment through creative writing and art, as well as traditional homework, tests, and comprehensive exams. Eighth grade religion covers the history of Church and the Commandments: Three quarters of the year will deal with the development and spread of Christianity up to the present. The course covers the apostolic church, the development of Church structure, Creed and theology, as well as the art, architecture, ritual and spirituality of worship through the ages. Particular emphasis is given to the saints as role models for Christian living and prayer. In the spring a quarter is devoted to the Ten Commandments and the morality of the New Testament. Current moral issues are examined in light of the scriptures and Catholic teaching. Throughout the year students are assessed through traditional tests, homework, research and comprehensive exams, as well as by reflection essays and literary projects.
