Congratulations, Tennis and Track and Field!
Both Boys and Girls Tennis Teams won the 2A State Champions in Jackson today! Congratulation to the tennis teams and Coach Lynn Ogden!
The State Track Meet held yesterday in Pearl and St. Joe placed 3rd in the state! Two St. Joe students won Gold Medals (1^st Place); sophomore Reilly Reeves was the Gold Medal Winner in the 1600 and 3200 in the women’s division and senior Ryan Crandall won the same in the men’s division. Congratulations to all and to Coach Kenner Purvis and Coach David Wissel.

Basketball Tryouts
Girls basketball tryouts have been rescheduled for today from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. and Thursday, May 16 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Boys tryouts will be Friday, May 17 immediately following school; Saturday, May 18 at 10:00 a.m., and Sunday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m.

Spring Sports Banquet

Please join us in recognizing our athletes at the Spring Sports Banquet this Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. The following sports will be highlighted: soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, bowling, track and golf. The Booster Club will provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, water and ice. Summer Camps
May 28 – 31 Soccer Camp will be from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Cost is $100 pre-registration and $125 day of for grades PK4 – 6.
June 3 – 6 Football Camp will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Cost is $145 for grades 2 – 8.
June 10 – 11 Volleyball Camp will be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $75.
June 17 – 20 Basketball Camp times will be 8:00 a.m. to noon. Cost is $125 for grades 4 – 9.
July 29 – August 2 Cheerleader Camp will be from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Cost is $100 for girls grades 1 – 6.

2013 Swim Team Season

August 1 – November 2

The St. Joe Swim Team is a competitive team which competes against other high schools within the Mississippi High School Activities Association. Guys and girls grades 7-12 comprise the team. The 2012 boys' team finished second in the state and hopes to bring home a state championship this year. Our girls again finished third and are determined to move up this coming season. In both the girls and boys division we had an individual state champ and a championship relay team.

Lauri Stamm Collins is the head coach. She invites any student who likes to swim and is willing to practice hard to be a part of the team. In the past, swimmers have not had to have prior experience to join the team. This will be true unless we have more swimmers than we have had in the past. In that case, we may have to have try-outs or two squads.

The St. Joe team is a popular sport at St. Joe for several reasons:
1. It starts at the beginning of the year so lets people instantly have a group of which to be a part.
2. All swimmers get to participate in all meets with the exception of State Meet which requires qualifying times.
3. Camaraderie is strong because swimmers go to breakfast together after morning practice. Juniors and seniors take the underclassmen with them.

Please email Coach Collins if you are planning to swim for St. Joe this fall. We will be ordering t-shirts and suits before the summer is over. Any questions, email or call Coach Lauri Collins at lcollins@stjoebruins.com or 601-927-6232.

Meets run from mid-August to State Meet November 2. Some will be on Saturdays; others on weekday afternoons.

Swimmers are required to attend at least 4 practices a week, two of which must be mornings.

Info for ordering suits will be sent to the team as soon as all have signed up.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Each parent will be contacted to help with breakfast food and snacks for swim meets. If you have requests, please email those to me.

It is strongly suggested for swimmers to swim this summer to get ready for the fall season. Look for an interclub team to join if possible. There are St. Joe swimmers on the Northeast Courthouse team, the Jackson Yacht Club team, MS Makos, Sunkist, and YMCA team.

Awards Day
High School – Tuesday, May 14
Middle School – Thursday, May 16
The High School Awards Day is Tuesday, May 14, at 9:10 a.m. in the Fine Arts Center. Freshman, sophomores and juniors are required to wear their dress uniforms. The Middle School Awards Day is Thursday, May 16, at 9:10 a.m. also in the Fine Arts Center. 7th and 8th graders are required to wear their dress uniforms. Parents are welcome to come.

8th Grade Celebration
After the awards ceremony on May 16, the 8th graders will continue their celebration with a school picnic and afternoon of fun and games. Students should bring modest shorts or jeans and a t-shirt to change into. Although the baseball deck will be open for the students during this time, they may also bring picnic blankets or towels for the grassy areas.

Service Hours
Service hour deadline for 7th – 11th grades: Monday, May 13.

Final Exams
Students are obligated to stay at school during exams until the exam is complete and will not be dismissed early.

Tuition Assistance
The deadline for submitting your tuition assistance application through FACTs with supporting tax documents is May 15, 2013. The committee will meet to award assistance immediately following this deadline. It takes up to one week for all applications with supporting tax documents to be verified by FACTs. This means you should be sure to have your application, along with supporting tax documents, 100% complete no later than May 8, 2013. The application website is www.factstuitionaid.com.

As each of you are gearing up for summer, please remember that we offer two Used-Uniform sales for our families during the summer. If you have a graduating senior, have outgrown your uniforms, or no longer need them, please consider donating them to the sale. All proceeds from the Used-Uniform Sale go directly to the Parent Association budget to be used in support of their good works with the school community. Dance Marathon

The Dance Marathon committee raised $11,585 for Blair E. Batson! Congratulations to everyone who helped make this event so successful. Please keep Kate Sullivan in your prayers. Kate was as ACE student who began teaching at St. Joe in 2001 as a Spanish teacher; she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery this week.
Please pray for Anna Baladi who had spinal fusion surgery this week.
Pray for the family of Casey, Jack and Selah Hall. Their grandmother died this week.

St. Francis of Assisi needs volunteers to help with set up of Cajun Fest on May 17 beginning at 4:00 p.m. They also need volunteers to work hourly shifts on May 19 from 11:30 until 4:30 p.m. See the service hour bulletin board for more information. These service hours preformed at Cajun Fest will count towards service hours for the 2013-14 school year.

City of Ridgeland Junior Diplomat Program Applications for the City of Ridgeland Junior Diplomat Program are available from Brother Dan in the guidance office. You must be a rising junior or senior with a 3.0 GPA. You will need three letters of recommendation and a resume of your activities. The application deadline is August 16. It is recommended that you submit your applications before the end of the school year.

Days of Intrigue This summer program is offered by the Center for Intelligence and Security Studies at the University of Mississippi. It is offered to rising juniors and seniors who are interested is a career with the CIA, FBI and NSA. The program will be offered from June 10 – 14. Mississippi State University Summer Bridge Program This program is for students interested in majoring in engineering and is designed to build skills to be successful in an engineering program. Rural Medical Scholars Program This program is for rising seniors who are interested in a career as a family physician. In this program you will be given the opportunity to attend Mississippi State University for five weeks this summer (June 2 – July 8, 2013), take two pre-med courses (Biology & Sociology) and observe doctors at practice throughout the program. Other than the $60.00 registration fee and the cost of textbooks and food during the program, there are no charges to the scholars. Tuition and room charges are all provided by the program. New Parent Orientation
Monday, May 6
St. Joe will host a New Parent Orientation for new families with incoming students for the fall on Monday, May 6, at 6:00 p.m. in the library. We will answer questions for our new families. If you know of a new family coming to St. Joe next school year, please encourage them to attend and welcome them to our Bruin family.

On Thursday St. Joe celebrated the May Crowning, the blessing of junior class rings, and the blessing of the 8^th grade. Pictured above is rising senior Lucy Kennington and Father Mike O'Brien who celebrated the Mass.

2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR

Bruin Ambassador Program
St. Joe is proud to announce the newly forming Bruin Ambassador program. Young men and women in rising grades 8-12 who are interested in promoting St. Joe should contact Mrs. Garrard. Being involved with Bruin Ambassadors will provide leadership opportunities that will help students gain professional skills in interviewing, recruiting as well as benefiting our school in so many ways. Responsibilities will include speaking at parishes, feeder schools and assemblies; shadowing students, writing to prospective students and assisting with mailings throughout the year. The first required meeting is Tuesday, May 7, at 7:30 a.m. At this meeting students will learn about the requirements for participation in the Bruin Ambassador Program. END OF THE YEAR

Service Hours
As a part of our mission, our students develop their God-given talents in service to others through our Gospel Service Learning Program. Middle school students are required to have 20 hours; high school students are required to have 30. Service hour deadline: 7th – 11th grade hours are due May 11. Students completing all required hours will receive two A's for test grades in religion class. Those not completing all service hours will receive two F's as test grades in religion for 4th quarter. Hours are posted in religion class; students are responsible for making sure that hours reported are accurate. Please e-mail pewbank@stjoebruins.com if you have any questions or discrepancies. Students who fail to complete required hours may not be allowed to matriculate to the next year.

Final Exams: Financial Obligations
Any student who has outstanding fees (lost books, library fines, athletic fees, etc.) or tuition/tuition loan payments due will not be permitted to take final exams. If unable to take final exams, the student will be given an incomplete. Your child has been previously informed if he or she has outstanding fees. Parents, please ask your child for that information.

Senior Exemptions
Students must meet all of the following criteria for senior exemptions:
1) Seniors may be exempt from final exams if they have an overall average of 90% or higher in the course
2) Students must be in good standing with a clear disciplinary record
3) Students must not exceed three unexcused tardies or four unexcused absences in the second semester
4) Final determination rests with the administration

The fifth annual Flight to the Finish 5-K will be on Saturday, May 4. The race starts at 9:00 a.m. at St. Richards Catholic Church. 5.29K Run/Walk
College Savings Mississippi will hold its first annual “The Way To Go 5.29K” race on Saturday, May 4, at the Renaissance at Colony Park in Ridgeland, MS. There will be a 1 Mile Fun Run for kids, following the 5.29K walk/run. The race has been changed from the typical 5K to a 5.29K to promote MACS, one of Mississippi’s 529 college savings plans, and the importance of saving for college. Proceeds from the race will be used to award FOURTEEN college scholarships on race day. Eight of the scholarships will be given to the top place finishers in each age group in the fun run. Three scholarships will be given away as door prizes. And three additional scholarships will be awarded to the teams with the most registered racers. Select here for more information about the race. St. Francis of Assisi's Annual Cajun Fest will be May 19. On May 2 in the gym at 9:10 a.m. St. Joseph will celebrate the May Crowning, the blessing of junior class rings, and the blessing of the 8^th grade. Students are required to wear dress uniforms. Parents are invited to join us to help venerate our Blessed Mother and honor our students as they prepare to start their senior and freshman years in high school.

The deadline for submitting your tuition assistance application through FACTs with supporting tax documents is May 15, 2013. The committee will meet to award assistance immediately following this deadline. It takes up to one week for all applications with supporting tax documents to be verified by FACTs. Service Hours (Important Info)
As a part of our mission, our students develop their God-given talents in service to others through our Gospel Service Learning Program. Middle school students are required to have 20 hours; high school students are required to have 30. Service hour deadlines: Seniors' hours are due April 30; 7th – 11th grade hours are due May 11. Students completing all required hours will receive two A's for test grades. Those not completing all service hours will receive two F's as test grades for 4th quarter. Hours are posted in religion class; students are responsible for making sure that hours reported are accurate. Please e-mail pewbank@stjoebruins.com if you have any questions or discrepancies. Students who fail to complete required hours may not be allowed to matriculate to the next year.

Please send early dismissals to the front office by 8:30 a.m. on the day of the dismissal. This will insure that your child is in the office and ready to be dismissed at the given time. The school would prefer a note be sent to the front office instead of phone calls throughout the day.
It is against school safety rules to let students off anywhere but the carpool line by the cafeteria in the morning. This includes students who come early at 7:00 a.m. Also, afternoon pickup is not allowed anywhere but the carpool line by the cafeteria.

Prom Location
The Junior/Senior Prom will be held at the Mississippi Children's Museum. The museum is located at 2145 Highland Drive in Jackson. Take I-55 to Lakeland Drive; travel east on Lakeland to Highland Drive; turn south onto Highland Drive; turn left into the museum.
Evening Schedule

Pictures will be taken beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Dinner will be served at 8:15 p.m.
Senior parents should arrive at 9:00 p.m. for the first dance. Dressy casual.

FAFSA
Senior parents are reminded that most college financial aid offices and many scholarship programs require submission of the FAFSA form. The information on the FAFSA will be used to compile a financial aid package to assist with the cost of your child’s education. (EX.: academic scholarship + work study + grant + loan = cost of tuition + room and board +fees.) For more information select this link.

Seniors that applied to colleges using the common application are reminded that they are required to submit a mid-year report. Complete and sign the report form and bring it to Brother Dan for further processing. It is the student's responsibility to see that the report is submitted.

Final Exam – Financial Obligations
Any student who has outstanding fees (lost books, library fines, athletic fees, etc.) or tuition/tuition loan payments due will not be permitted to take final exams. If unable to take final exams, the student will be given an incomplete. Your child has been previously informed if he or she has outstanding fees. Parents, please ask your child for that information.

Senior Exemptions
Students must meet all of the following criteria for senior exemptions:

1) Seniors may be exempt from final exams if they have an overall average of 90% or higher in the course
2) Students must be in good standing with a clear disciplinary record
3) Students must not exceed three unexcused tardies or four unexcused absences in the second semester
4) Final determination rests with the administration

Ticket Price

Tickets are $25 for St. Joe seniors and $50 for guests from outside St. Joe. Tickets are $50 for juniors, unless they participated in the Cheesecake Fundraiser. Juniors have been notified if they are receiving a reduced rate. Tickets are on sale now.

Evening Schedule

Pictures will be taken beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Dinner will be served at 8:15 p.m.
Senior parents should arrive at 9:00 p.m. for the first dance.

Limos

Limos are welcome, but not required. There is parking for those who would like to drive their own cars.

Bone Marrow Registry

Anyone interested in registering for the bone marrow registry may go online to http://marrow.org to register. The registry will mail a kit to your home with swabbing instructions. Please consider being a bone marrow donor.

5.29K Run/Walk
College Savings Mississippi will hold its first annual “The Way To Go 5.29K” race on May 4 at the Renaissance at Colony Park in Ridgeland, MS. There will be a 1 Mile Fun Run for kids, following the 5.29K walk/run. The race has been changed from the typical 5K to a 5.29K to promote MACS, one of Mississippi’s 529 college savings plans, and the importance of saving for college. Proceeds from the race will be used to award FOURTEEN college scholarships on race day. Eight of the scholarships will be given to the top place finishers in each age group in the fun run. Three scholarships will be given away as door prizes. And three additional scholarships will be awarded to the teams with the most registered racers. Select here for more information about the race. SUMMER CAMPS

May 28 – 31 Soccer Camp will be from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Cost is $125 for ages 4 through grade 6.

June 3 – 6 Football Camp will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Cost is $140 for grades 2 through 8.
June 10 – 11 Volleyball Camp will be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $75.
July 29 – August 2 Cheerleader Camp will be from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Cost is $100 for girls entering grades 1 through 6.

Alumni Baseball Event

The second annual alumni baseball reunion was held on Saturday, April 13. Attending and playing were alumni from 1969 thru 2011. It was a pleasure to have them join us for the varsity win over Forest Hill. Afterwards, the St. Joe graduates played five innings with the Balding Bruins being victorious over the Boling Street Bruins. The final score was 16 – 7. It was a great afternoon of baseball!

Madison County Sheriff's Explorer Program This program is for students interested in a career in law enforcement. To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 14 and 18 and a student in good academic standing. A physical is required. Applications are available in the front office of the Sheriff's office. Contact Sgt. Radford Shearrill at 601-859-2345. The application deadline is May 6, 2013. A limited number of applicants will be accepted.

Military Academy Day Military Academy Day will be held Saturday, April 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Registration is at 8:30 a.m.

The program will be held at Pearl H.S., 500 Pirate Cove, Pearl. Representatives from West Point, the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy and Merchant Marine Academy will be present to answer your questions.

The Mississippi Economic Council's Star Student Program honors the highest ACT scores at Mississippi Schools. Pictured above is our St. Joe winner, MariMac Collins, who scored 35 out of 36. St. Joe Student Success

Jason Price speed-walked in the Biggest Loser Half Marathon in Jackson recently and finished the 13.1 mile course in 2 hours and 46 minutes. His mother, Debbie Price, believes that Jason's ability to finish the course, and do so with such a good finishing time, was a direct result of the mental toughness that has been developed by his being at St. Joe. Debbie said, "I told him, speaking as a veteran of two marathons and three half-marathons, that finishing courses such as the one he finished will help him in so many ways, both in his academic life and his life outside of school." She thanks St. Joe for helping to continue to develop the attributes in students that we as parents hope to foster in our kids. Congratulations, Jason, and thanks, Debbie.

Freshman Friday at Holmes will be April 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. This is registration day for current high school students who will attend Holmes CC in the summer and/or fall. Madison County Sheriff's Explorer Program This program is for students interested in a career in law enforcement. To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 14 and 18 and a student in good academic standing. A physical is required. Applications are available in the front office of the Sheriff's office. Mr. Michael Juhas
New President of St. Joe

St. Joseph Catholic School has announced the selection of Michael P. Juhas, Jr. as the new president. Mr. Juhas will fill this position as part of a new administrative model. The selection was made after a nationwide search and recommendation by the St. Joe Advisory Council to Msgr. Michael Flannery, Canonical Administrator.
Last Spring, Sister Deborah Hughes, SSJ, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, and the St. Joseph Advisory Council explored the possibility for a new administrative model for the school. It was determined that a President-Principal model would allow for a strong, collaborative administrative team which will position St. Joseph to continue its excellence in Catholic education. The president’s role will focus on the business, financial, and public relations aspects of the school. The principal’s role will continue to focus on the students, teachers, curriculum and day-to-day operations of the school. Mr. Keith Barnes was appointed principal of the school in the spring of 2012, and a search began for an individual to fill the president’s role.

“We are very pleased to announce this appointment. Mr. Juhas will bring strong leadership and extensive fundraising experience to St. Joe, along with an impressive educational background,” reported Lester K. Diamond, Advisory Council Chairman. “Mr. Barnes and Mr. Juhas will work collaboratively to continue the advancement of the excellent academic Catholic school program St. Joe is known for in the Jackson metro area,” added Sr. Deborah.
Mr. Juhas’ resume includes over 13 years of Catholic education, fundraising and enrollment experience with Catholic schools. He is currently serving as the principal of Queen of Angels School in Port Angeles, Washington. He has served as Director of Student Activities, math and Latin instructor at the middle to high school level, an elementary school teacher and a coach of football, basketball and tennis. Mr. Juhas has also been a keynote speaker on the topics of enrollment management, technology and Catholic education.
Mr. Juhas holds both a Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Mississippi and a Masters of Education degree from the University of Cincinnati. He was reared in New Orleans where he attended Jesuit High School. He is currently married with three children.

Journalism Students Honored

Our journalism students took 24 awards, including first place for the best student newspaper among small schools, at the 2013 Mississippi Scholastic Press Association convention last week. Other first-place awards students received included honors for best news story, best feature story, best entertainment story, best sports story, best sports column and best page design – all for stories they wrote and that appeared in the student newspaper, The Bear Facts. “We have a great, talented, dedicated group of journalism students who have worked hard all year to produce an outstanding school newspaper and yearbook,” said Mr. Barnes. “I would put our students’ products up against any other school in the state. They have worked hard all year. I am thrilled they have received much-deserved statewide recognition for their efforts. Great things are happening at St. Joe – and they are one example of the quality of students we have attending this institution.” St. Joseph competed against small, 1A-, 2A- and 3A-classified schools in the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association contest. St. Joseph is classified a 2A school; St. Joe competed against other schools that included Jackson Academy and St. Andrew’s Episcopal in metro Jackson. Besides having individual St. Joe students win key first place writing awards, the entire staffs of The Bear Facts and The Shield, the school yearbook, also won first place awards for their collective work throughout the year. The Shield staff won first place for best ad design. The Bear Facts staff won first place for overall best news writing, best sports writing and best layout and design. The Bear Facts also took home first place in the day’s biggest award – General Excellence, given to the best student newspaper among small schools. “I couldn’t be more proud of my students’ accomplishments,” said Mr. Cassreino, who is a former newspaper reporter and editor who teaches journalism at St. Joe and is certified by the Journalism Education Association as a journalism educator. “To have your students recognized for editing and publishing the best newspaper in the state is a major achievement,” Cassreino said. “The awards our students won are a testament to their hard work and talent – especially considering the strong competition.” For a complete list of the awards, select here. National ACT Scaling Study
St. Joseph Catholic School has agreed to participate in a pilot program for ACT. On April 22 and 23 randomly selected students in grades 7-10 will participate in a computer based test as part of the scaling study. Why is this study important? Participation in this study will help ACT finalize a new system of integrated assessments designed to meet the evolving needs of our nation’s schools. Called ACT Aspire™, the cohesive longitudinal assessment system will fully connect student performance from elementary through high school to measure student progress towards college and career readiness.

March for April

Awesome day for all who participated in the March for April DeLoach. Over 450 registered to run; 350 people crossed the finish line; and 130 people registered with the Be the Match Registry and were swabbed as potential bone marrow donors. Many thanks to all who helped in any way!

LETTER FROM MR. BARNES & SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Parents,

Our year is quickly coming to an end, and it seems like yesterday that I was given the privilege of serving this community as principal. I owe you, our families, much gratitude for your support this year. I have loved sharing the successes of your children; I have learned from your constructive criticism and your positive reinforcement. I am a coach at heart, and so glad your family is on my team.

As we reach these last few weeks, I ask that you help us encourage our students to learn all they can in each class. Be sure they follow rules about the dress code and tardies. We will not offer summer school this year, but have several camp opportunities available. Look for information in the Bruin Buzz.
On behalf of all of us who work in the front office, thank you for sending dismissal notes at the beginning of the day: it makes a difference and sets a good example when parents follow the rules too.
I would be remiss in not thanking all who have contributed to the activities sponsored by the Parent Association. What a treat the faculty lunches are once a month, and the area priests love coming to St. Joe because the food is always good! From the honor society induction to the overwhelming success of the Draw Down, St. Joe is successful because of parents pitching in to help.

Announcement of New President
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Juhas as president of St. Joseph Catholic School effective July 1. Mike is a native of New Orleans and a graduate of Jesuit High School, the University of Mississippi and the University of Cincinnati. He has taught in schools in New Orleans, China and Dallas and is currently Principal of Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Port Angeles, Washington. He and his wife Hai Li have three young boys ages 10 months, 3 years and 4 years. More details to follow in future editions of Bruin Buzz.

There will be no school on Good Friday, March 29; however, we will have school on Easter Monday, April 1. Happy Easter!

April 26 – No School
As the end of the school year approaches, we have one more unused "weather" day built into our school calendar. After much consideration and discussion, the Administrative Council has decided Friday, April 26 will be used as our weather day and there will be no school. While this was going to be Olympic Day for all students and no classes would be held, the administration felt it was in the best interest of the students to cancel Olympic Day and use that day as our weather day. This way we will not lose two days of instruction (Olympic Day plus a separate weather day).

While we understand that eliminating Olympic Day may be disappointing for some students, the Administration decided this schedule will better serve the entire St. Joseph community.

GOOD DEEDS

Jack and Jill Service Project
Nick Bohannon, Bria Paige, Noah Greene, Kendall Watson and Kaitlyn Watson are participating in a community service project through Jack and Jill of America to start a library at the Henley Juvenile Detention Center in Jackson. They are soliciting donations of new books, gently used books and donations to develop a library at the facility for the detainees. The hope is that this library will help the youth detainees develop or maintain an interest in reading and learning. These students are asking their St. Joe family to assist them with this service project through April 1. The donation box can be found in the administration lobby.

Upcoming 5K Runs
Junior Joseph Edge was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at eight years old. Joseph is a role model to his classmates, our community and nationally for Cystic Fibrosis. This Sunday, March 24, there will be a 5K Cystic Fibrosis run. If possible, join his team of runners. Select here for details and to register.

Seventh grade math teacher Judy DeLoach's daughter-in-law, April, is battling leukemia. She and her husband have two children. On Saturday, March 30, a benefit 5K run/walk will be held at Germantown High School. A bone marrow drive will also be held at the race site. Select here to register.

Good Friday
There will be no school on Good Friday, March 29. However, we will have school on Easter Monday, April 1. The Diocese of Jackson and our local feeder schools will be open that day as well.

Cardinal Project

Before spring break Mr. Ewbank's 8th grade religion class was assigned to pick a cardinal and write a persuasive essay as to why his cardinal should be selected pope. While each student did a wonderful job making the case for his cardinal, these two students correctly chose Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to be the next pope! France Trip

During spring break several students joined Mrs. Bobbi Naylor for a tour of Paris, the Provence and the Côte d'Azur. Included in the 8-day trip were visits to the Louvre museum, Versailles, Avignon, the Roman amphitheather in Nîmes, Pont du Gard, Monaco and Nice. St. Joseph Altar

Parent Lesa Nuzzo sentimentally fixes the donated food on the St. Joe altar before the feast day Mass. Lesa, herself an Italian, helped start the altar in 2002 and has been its chair person since 2006.

Easter Drive
Again this year the St. Joe faculty and staff are collecting money and food for the less fortunate. Brother John coordinates a drive at Thanksgiving and at Easter to help families in the metro area. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please do so by Thursday, March 28. Send your contribution to Brother John Brennan. Thank you for your generosity.

Distinguished Teacher Award

St. Joe parent, Mrs. Vicki Moorehead, recently received the National Catholic Educational Association Distinguished Teacher Award. She was one of 12 named from a pool of over 100,000 candidates. Mrs. Moorehead has been a teacher in the Diocese of Jackson for 24 years, teaching at St. Richard for 20 years and at St. Anthony for the past four years. She is the mother of junior AK Moorehead and taught many of our St. Joe students over the years. Congratulations, Mrs. Moorehead.

2013 Youth Summit

Junior Nick Bohannon was one of 60 teens from across the nation selected to attend the 2013 Youth Summit for America's Promise Alliance, to share and develop ideas to keep youth in school. This organization was founded by Former Secretary of State and Retired General Colin Powell and his wife, Alma, to focus on reducing the drop-out rate among our nation's youth. Obtain a PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov for both you and your student. This will allow you both to electronically sign documents which is required for online submission.

9. Parents of seniors and juniors are encouraged to review the college application and scholarship information that will be posted in this section of the Bruin Buzz.

College Application Process
Once you have decided where you would like to apply, do the following:
1. See Brother Dan with a completed Transcript Release Form for each college. This form is available in the Guidance Office. Transcripts are mailed through the postal service and not emailed. Please keep this in mind regarding application deadlines.
2. ACT and SAT scores will be printed on the transcript if the release has been signed to send the scores to St. Joseph Catholic School.
3. See Brother Dan if an evaluation form and/or letter of recommendation is required. Give Brother Dan at least a two (2) week notice to compose an appropriate letter.
4. Some applications require a letter of recommendation from one or two teachers. It is the student's responsibility to ask teachers for recommendations and to respectfully remind them of the due dates. Please give teachers at least two (2) weeks notice to compose an appropriate letter.
5. If using the Common Application visit www.commonapp.org: Read all the information regarding this college application system. Download the Counselor form and complete and sign the student section. Bring paperwork to Brother Dan in the Guidance Office for processing. Fill out a Transcript Release Form for each college.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Scholarships These scholarships are available to high achieving students (male or female) who plan to attend a Historically Black College or University.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- GPA of 3.25 or higher
- School and Community Service including all leadership roles and
extracurricular activities
-Verification of acceptance at a Historically Black College or University

National Catholic College Admission Association Scholarship Eight (8) $1000 one-time scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors graduating in Spring 2013 who will be attending one of the National CCAA member institutions. Award recipients must be enrolled at a National CCAA member institution for college beginning Fall 2013. A short application must be completed and submitted. High school and
college information will be verified for students receiving the scholarship awards. Award recipients will be selected by a random drawing. Recipients must give National CCAA permission to use their name and image for public relations purposes. The deadline is March

Central MS Ole Miss Rebel Club Scholarship $1,000 scholarships are offered to students accepted for the 2013-2014 school year at Ole Miss. These scholarships will be paid to the University of MS for freshmen year tuition and expenses. Applicants must be on track for high school graduation in 2013 with a "B" average. Applicants must have an ACT score between 21-28 (inclusive). Applicants must demonstrate leadership in school, religious and/or community organizations. Boys State 2013 This leadership program will be held from May 26 – June 1 and is for rising senior boys. Applications are now available from Brother Dan in the guidance office.

Summer Youth Institute 2013 at Ole Miss SYI brings together rising sophomores and juniors (present 9th and 10th graders) interested in making a difference in their communities. SYI focuses on civil rights history, leadership training and building relationships. This program runs from June 15-23, 2013 and is free. Application deadline is March 15, 2013.
