Speech and Debate

The St. Joseph Speech and Debate Team has been an active member of the National Forensic League for 16 years. The team consistently receives recognition for achievements including championships at national and state levels. They participate in approximately ten tournaments annually, including year-end tournaments for state championships and national tournament qualifiers. The team has had students qualify for national tournaments every year. The speech and debate team is led by Pam Walberg.

To be a member of the Speech and Debate team, students must maintain an overall A/B average, have no history of behavior issues, and have a strong work ethic. Practice takes place on Saturday mornings, so much of a student’s work is done independently. Students who participate in Speech and Debate have an edge in college admission and improved reading, listening, writing, and critical thinking skills. This influence boosts students social and academic confidence. Students have also received scholarships to colleges and universities to participate in their Speech and Debate programs.

Pam Walberg has been coach of the St. Joseph Speech and Debate team for the past 16 years. Over the years she has been awarded One of Jackson’s Top Teacher, Speech Teacher of the Year for Mississippi, and Speech Teacher of the Year for the Southern Section. Coach Walberg will be retiring from Speech and Debate at the end of this school year, she will be missed by all who participated in the program. Her assistant coach, Mrs. Linda King will be taking her place for the 2014-2015 school year.
